Cross flow fans, also known as Tangential fan, feature multi-blade, long cylindrical impellers with forward-facing multi-wing blades. What exactly is a cross-flow fan, and what are its construction and characteristics? Let experts from LONGWELL Electric Technology Co., Ltd. provide you with insights:
Understanding Cross flwo fan:
When the impeller rotates, air enters through the open side of the impeller, flows through the internal structure of the impeller, and exits on the other side, creating the working airflow. The airflow within the impeller is highly complex, and the airflow velocity field is inherently unstable. Within the impeller, a vortex forms, typically located near the diffuser tongue. The presence of this vortex causes a circular flow at the impeller's outlet, resulting in curved airflow patterns within the impeller.
As a result, the flow velocity at different points on the outer circumference of the impeller is not uniform. The velocity is higher near adjacent vortex cores and lower near the diffuser tongue. The airflow velocity and working pressure at the fan's outlet are not uniform. Consequently, the fan's flow coefficient and pressure index are averaged. The presence of vortices can significantly impact the characteristics of Cross flwo fan. If the vortex is similar to the inner circumference of the impeller and close to the diffuser tongue, the fan exhibits favorable characteristics. However, if the vortex is farther from the diffuser tongue, the region of cyclic flow expands, reducing the fan's efficiency and increasing the overall flow's instability.

Construction and Characteristics of Cross flwo fan:
Cross flwo fan employ elongated barrel-shaped impellers. These large-diameter barrel-shaped fan blades enable the use of lower speed ratios while maintaining the overall gas circulation volume, effectively reducing the noise generated by high-speed operation.
The impeller of the fan undergoes rotor dynamic balancing, similar to the balancing of vehicle wheels. In simple terms, this balancing ensures that the impeller remains stable during operation, reducing noise and prolonging the fan's lifespan. Rotor dynamic balancing is a time-consuming process. Essentially, balance weights are added at specific positions on the impeller. However, the precise locations and amounts of balance weights can significantly affect the fan's service life.
The fan blades are designed with careful consideration, creating irregular spacing between them. This deliberate irregularity aims to make the rotating impeller generate "irregular" sound frequencies in the air, resulting in a more natural "whooshing" sound rather than concentrated noise at specific frequencies. There are two types of noise: regular variable noise, which can be annoying, and broadband noise, which is more akin to natural sounds, although it cannot be completely eliminated and is relatively less bothersome.
The choice of materials for fan blades is critical. The long barrel-shaped fan blades of Cross flwo fan, if manufactured using subpar materials, may save costs but lead to frequent deformation. The blades will no longer align in a straight line, resulting in significant noise and vibrations during operation.

The motor selection is crucial since the impeller relies on the motor for operation. A poor-quality motor can lead to improper operation, reduced efficiency, and continuous buzzing sounds.
